Singing the Seasons Paperback – January 10, 2023 by Helen Fujimoto (Author)

Fujimoto artfully uses her language to tell her story through poems. Her spirit seems to grow with each line. Her memories are shared with thought. To write of the life of another, especially one you’ve lost is quite an undertaking and Fujimoto handles it quite nicely.

This book of poetry contains poems that grew from the author writing about her husband’s illness and death and their life together.  They are compiled together in sections such as Weathering, Parting and Grieving in a way to convey the author’s love and grief.

I enjoy reading poetry books, or any books really in which I can get absorbed in what they are saying or telling me so much so that I’m able to put aside other things.  The poems in this book are centered but will also rattle at your heart strings.

From the poem “Forest Breathing”

“The forest breathes
gently
after rain
small birds sing
crickets call
leaves slide off
drops to
wet-leaf carpets
below”

Despite the emotions behind the book’s inspiration, these poems are easy to climb into and to experience.  They are intricate and free.

The author cleverly uses an introductory poem at the start of each section that sets the mood.  It adds another layer to what’s about to unfold.

Fujimoto uses free verse mostly for her poems.  They are sharp and unyielding and imaginative with their own soul.

From the poem “Your Shadow”

“I join the party
your shadow
at my back”

This book of poems will circle you and catch your heart.  If you’ve been through personal grief of any sort, or even if you luckily haven’t, these poems are a place you can go to be hugged by Fujimoto’s words.
