The author states that this new book is based on real family members. Watson even uses their real names, too. The story, according to the author, is “wedded historical facts with oral history, but the fabric … and their dialogue are fictional.” In this book, there appears to be a literary connection to Don Quixote.
This book, though, is the story of brother Dom Urban Guillet and its hero, Joannes
Henricus Huetz. The book very much reads like a textbook, but one that’s full of storytelling and not so much things you might have to learn in order to pass a history class. Illustrations and references accompany the chapters and give it a superb flavor towards its place with historical fiction novels.
From Chapter 9: Inferno –
“Holding the newly arrived letter in his hand and clutching it fast to
his heart, John watched Dom Urban excitingly hold a conference with
Father Dunand. He tried to overhear what the two holy men were
discussing so vehemently. Red-faced and smiling broadly, Urban loudly
declared, “Father, this is a Miracle! A wondrous opportunity, don’t you
agree? To be given a four-hundred-acre tract of land, as a gift! Well,
that is a present from God! We have to accept it as a fortune dropped
into our laps!”
This is a very intriguing story. It is so well-written, that you’ll question whether or not it could’ve happened or not as the author skillfully weaves in real facts within the chapters so that it seems like a likely and almost possible adventure.
The character dialogue is spot on and fits each person so well. The scenes are complimentary of one another, the action moves at a good pace, and as you finish reading one chapter you’ll want to go on to the next one to see what’s going to happen.
This book sparks curiosity. It has a good rhythm to it as well.
It is obvious that Watson put in a great deal of preparation into this book. Those efforts are to be commended as it is not always easy to write up historical fiction that is entertaining and also believable.
You’ll have fun delving into this tale just to simply watch these characters discover their purposes in life. This book is full of struggles and triumphs and much more. You will also want to see these folks succeed and to stay with them through each and every turn to the end.
Watson, an author of some other books, is an accomplished author. This book is a celebration of the past weaved into a very possible future.
