Steen intrigues the reader with classic suspense from the very beginning through nostalgic memories of his childhood. Between Here and Now explores the past life of Steen as a child and shows the reader the long way he has come through. A sensation of airflow throughout the book is evident as it puts the reader in a relaxed state of mind.

Starting with HERE, the poet talks about a basement that is full of secrets and a door with an abandoned keyhole having a cracked mirror behind and some flakes of paint scattered around. Undoubtedly, this is the best start the poet could have penned down to hold the readers for the pages entailing poetry lying ahead to turn over. Moreover, this poem sets up a benchmark of classical suspense in poetry.

“The basement is full of secrets there aren’t any lights and a torch is of no use”

In WHERE I USED TO LIVE, the poet visits his old house after forty years to get back his old envelopes and diaries. He is happy about the fact that nobody would have ever thought of hiding behind a panel, giving him a sense of satisfaction that something still belongs to him regarding the house. Eventually, the poet does not take away those old envelopes and diaries for which he had come as “the house will never be the same again” if he would take them.

“I ring the bell where I used to live

the door is opened by a woman who finds my request intriguing

many years ago I forgot some envelopes

full of letters and diaries and photos”

The way Steen has started the book tries to end up the same way. No wonder how septically he has managed the mid-sections but the beginning and the end go identically with an element of classical suspense. NOW, is the absolute example of this where the poet talks about the different paths leading to an unknown or known place, quite abstract, and a shadow near the trees about to fall again not sure if it is his or someone else’s.
