No doubt, the inspiration of Irene in this collection has created very fine poems full of delicate and fine felicity of expression. In her poem "What Is Poetry?", the poet describes poetry her ‘new friend’:

Poetry is my new friend

It snuggled up to me.

and gave me a kiss

when I wasn't looking (p. 32)

The poet is quite right to affirm that poetry gives so sweet bliss and joy, which will entice any person to enter into it. Definition of poetry “a painting in words” or “a song that rhymes” fails to satisfy us. When Irene says that poetry is “my new friend”, “love and everlasting inspiration”, we feel that she has experienced the spirit of poetry.

In remembrance of 9/11, Irene shares her pain in “The Tallest Twins”:

I remember the tallest twins

110 stories

So strong and proud

With thousands of eyes that could see

All five borroughs of New York city.



They were my best friends

We met every day for brunch

But one day I could not come.

It was September 11, my birthday

And I had other plans (p. 1)

What we admire in the above lines is the poet’s passion, her humanity and deep anguish at the heart-breaking tragedy of 9/11. Her another poem “Poetry in the Air” is quite remarkable. A quotation from this poem is illuminating at this point :

All grown up and gone away

They’re still my babies

But I set them free.

It was time for them to go.



Now I sit by my window

As the world passes by.

I feel so lonely

And I cry.

Irene very aptly calls her poems “my babies”, because poetry has embraced her heart, and she loves it from the very start. Irene is an accomplished poetic artist. Her poetic art and subtle mastery of language is quite visible in the poems included in this collection “Poetry Unplugged”. The beautiful quote of Matthew Arnold is very much applicable for these poems by Irene Brodsky: ‘Poetry is simply the most beautiful, impressive, and widely effective mode of saying things.’

Irene Brodsky: I am a 71 year old retired Professor of Philosophy. I have been writing books since 2001. Born and raised in Brooklyn New York, I used to sing in nightclubs, but I always loved libraries and bookstores. My books are my babies. I hope they are welome everywhere.
