Review by LB Sedlacek

“On to Plan C: A Return to Travel” is a travel memoir written about travels taken after Covid. The author’s trips were cancelled from the various shut downs at airports and from countries closing up their borders and so on. Once travel was allowed again, the author took off traveling again often towing along his most useless thing of 2020, his passport.

Gilbert offers a comprehensive perspective highlighting his pages with descriptive writing and vivid portrayals of locales and destinations around the globe. The book is such a unique travel book because it also features the authors witty commentary and way of writing.

This book includes a wide variety of travel adventures from Fiji to London to the Caribbean and to Germany and beyond. Even if you’re not a traveler or haven’t considered traveling or maybe never have gone anywhere much, it is impossible to not begin to think about trying it yourself due to the author’s bold enthusiasm for his exciting trips.

Gilbert offers intriguing cultural insights in each chapter and its various divisions. Each section represents a specific trip so you easily know which travel adventure you are taking with him and his family.

He also includes gorgeous pictures from his travels. This contributes immensely to the reading experience.

The book is accessible and engaging. It will also probably inspire you to want to travel to some of the destinations in the book.

From “I. London”

“The headlines before our flight to London are a little

troubling. They include the specific “Baggage Mountain Leads

to Heathrow Cancellations,” complete with photos of said

baggage mountains, and the more general “Travel Armageddon

as Flight Delays, Cancellations Pile Up.” Another article warns

of 15,000 Heathrow passengers facing flight cancellations.”

The author is so visual you will feel as if you’re on the trip with him as you read along. He is very specific going into extreme detail about each place or part of the trip from the airports to hopping on and off buses to the hotels and more.

His appreciation for all things travel turns this into a learning experience immersing the reader in cultures they may not be familiar with until now. This is not just any travel book. This is one travel book that is both entertaining and interesting all at the same time!
